First edition of this biography of the famous alchemist Giuseppe Balsamo, commonly known as Count Cagliostro, written by the secretary of the judging congregation of the Holy Office which in 1791 sentenced Cagliostro to life imprisonment. This work, provided with an illustrated copy of an edict of Pope Benedictus XIV quoted in the trial, was intended as a sort of justification of the trial itself before European public opinion; notwithstanding, it nowadays represents a fundamental source on Balsamo's life.
